Combine Creativity and Imagination with Logic and Precision

We believe in the importance of both theory and application. Through a research sequence designed by student and mentor, translate classroom learning into hands-on investigation and problem solving.

Explore Our Math Degree Programs

As a Mathematics major, you’ll be part of a community of students and professors who value creativity and the courage to tackle difficult, unsolved problems. Deepen your understanding of calculus, modern algebra, physics and statistics, and build your programming and computational skills in applied computer science courses.

Math Lab

Housed under the School of Natural Sciences, the Math Lab provides free tutoring services to students enrolled in lower division math courses up to Calculus II. We’ll work with you to build self-confidence in math and become a more independent learner. You can drop-in for free tutoring and support any time we’re open.

Math Club

Math Club is the St. Edward's University student chapter of the Mathematical Association of America (MAA). All students, regardless of major, are welcome to join through Collegiate Link. The club's general objective is to promote the interests of the mathematical sciences through community service and research.

Paid Research and Internship Programs

STEM students in the Mathematics program are afforded access to funding for summer research and internships through programs like the Dr. M. Jean McKemie Summer Scholar Endowment and the Institute for Interdisciplinary Science (i4).  McKemie Summer Scholars receive a stipend in order to spend the summer working on an independent research project with mathematics faculty, that typically results in an external presentation or publication.  Additionally, i4 offers paid, in-workplace internships that help students to gain valuable practical experience as they move forward academically and professionally.

Placement for Mathematics Courses

All St. Edward’s students are required to complete a quantitative reasoning course. These and other mathematics courses require satisfactory placement, which can be achieved through SAT/ACT subscores or the ALEKS placement test.

Incoming students will receive information about math placement through HillStart and New Student Orientation.  The online can help you determine your placement information, based on your intended major, SAT/ACT subscores, and any prior college credit.  Online access to the ALEKS placement test is provided through Hillstart, as part of New Student Orientation. Your official placement score will be determined by a proctored ALEKS placement test during New Student Orientation.
